Girl At The Register Forgets To Finish The Order
She scanned two items, looked up, and the register stopped beeping. The line behind her was growing but she wasn’t in any rush to finish.
About this scene
Big-box store register, weekday afternoon. She is the cashier at the register, twenties, mid-transaction. She has scanned three items when the flash happens at the end of the queue. She stops scanning. The belt is full. She stares at the products for ten full seconds. The customer says ma'am. She does not respond. The customer says ma'am again. She finally snaps back.
What to watch for
The two ma'ams are the patience tax. The first is polite. The second is firmer. Between the two ma'ams she is fully gone, eyes on the angle, hand still on the scanner but not moving. The customer's frustration grows visibly across the ten seconds. After the second ma'am she snaps out of it and resumes scanning at twice her normal speed to make up for the delay. The total is correct. The customer pays and leaves with a confused look. The next customer in line saw everything.
