Approached her for directions and she bowed politely, started explaining in broken English. Then she saw what she saw and the polite smile turned into something else entirely. Cultural barrier didn’t matter at that point.

Parking lot, parked car, weekday afternoon. She's a Japanese woman, late twenties, holding her phone with a translation app open. She taps on the driver window asking for directions. He rolls it down. She repeats the question once in slightly different English. By the third attempt she is no longer asking for the directions, she is just standing at the window looking. The conversation continues for almost two minutes with neither of them speaking the same language fluently.

The phone screen goes dark in her hand. She does not look down at it again. Watch her body weight on her elbows. It moves further into the window over the course of the conversation. By the end she is leaning into the cabin in a way that has nothing to do with hearing him better.
