About this scene
Parked car, residential street, afternoon. She walks up to the driver window with her phone open to a map. She leans down to ask for an address. The flash is at the angle she'd see if she leaned an inch further. She leans the inch. Her expression cycles through three distinct beats inside ten seconds. She does not finish asking the question. She straightens up, says thanks-anyway in a flat voice, and walks down the sidewalk in the direction she came from.
What to watch for
The unfinished question is the social marker. She had a sentence going. She abandoned it mid-clause. Most people complete sentences they've started even when distracted. She does not. Watch her phone screen as she straightens up. The map app is still open and she does not look at it. The thanks-anyway is delivered without breaking eye contact with the sidewalk in front of her. By the time she's twenty feet away she's smiling.
