She is holding the book up at exactly the height that lets her watch over the top of it without seeming to.
What to watch for
The book height is precisely calibrated. Hold a paperback any higher and your eyes can't see over. Hold it any lower and the cover doesn't conceal the gaze. Hers is at the perfect compromise. Watch her thumb on the spine. It hasn't moved either. By the time the train reaches its terminus the book has been open to the same page for almost ten minutes. She closes it, puts it in her bag, and steps off without looking at him.
